“Vipassana” is often translated as “insight”. It is one of the most ancient meditation techniques and it involves concentration on the body and its sensations. It’s also the short way to name the 10-day silent meditation retreat based on this technique. ⁠
⁠
In Feb. 2020, I went to Candeleda, Spain, to do my first “Vipassana”. Here is a summary of the main rules: no talking, no reading, no writing, no communicating (with gestures or eye contact), no exercising (not even yoga) and yes of course, no phone or any kind of distractions. Waking-up at 4am, breakfast at 6h30am, lunch at 11am, and tea at 5pm (no more food until the next morning), lights out at 10pm and meditation the rest of the time.⁠

Let’s be honest, I had a panic attack on my couch in Paris 8 years ago just by reading about the program! Actively facing my thoughts 16h a day was literally the definition of my worst nightmare. It was not for nothing that I’d creatively created so many (unhealthy) coping mechanisms to avoid doing exactly that. My mind was the worst, most dangerous place that I was trying to escape at all cost!⁠

It’s when I reached the breaking point that I realized there was nowhere to escape. That’s when the journey back to my Self really started through traveling, experiences, psy, yoga, study, meditation... Over the years, I wandered and wondered and found myself along the way. I left behind my most self-destructive behaviors and learned to progressively accept myself. I was finally in a good place. Still a bit afraid to face the ghosts of my old self but ready to try.⁠

My experience of Vipassana was nothing like the ones people had shared with me or what I’d read online. Nothing prepared me for it. Not the testimonials, not my expectations or imagination. I went deep, sooooo deep. And it’s actually the good memories stored in my mind and my body that sent me over the edge. I entered a state of depression for the next 6 months and it’s only now that I’m seeing and feeling the positive impact it had on my life. ⁠
I know I will do it again soon, but it’s not a decision to take lightly, especially not for a deep diver!

Brainstorming, a technique for generating lots of Brainstorming, a technique for generating lots of creative and out-of-the-box ideas, was first described by Alex Osborn in a book published in 1953 called Applied Imagination. 

Since then, brainstorming has become a popular way of generating ideas. It has taken on many forms and can be applied to a wide range of topics, including life design.

If you’re stuck in your life, gather a facilitator and 3-6 people willing to participate in a 20'-1h brainstorming session.

1. Framing a Good Question

To get prototypable ideas (that you can test in real life), you need to ask a specific and open-ended question.

2. Warming Up 

To do a good job brainstorming, they need a transition from their hectic, event-driven workday to a state of relaxed, creative attention. Giving everyone a can of Play-Doh to play with always does the trick! Wild ideas often contain the seeds of the most useful things to prototype.

3. The Brainstorm Itself 

We recommend that all participants have their own pens/notepads and write down their ideas. That way, the group isn’t constrained by how fast the facilitator can record ideas, and less chance of losing a potentially great idea. 

The Rules of Brainstorming 

· Go for quantity, not quality 
· Defer judgment and do not censor ideas 
· Build off the ideas of others.
· Encourage wild ideas

4. Naming and Framing the Outcomes 

The most important part of a brainstorm: Ideas should be counted and then grouped together by subject or category. Name those categories, and frame the results with reference to the original focal question.
At the end of our four-step process, the goal is to say something like “We had 141 ideas, we grouped those into six categories, and, based on our focal question, we selected eight killer ideas to prototype; then we prioritized the list, and our first prototype is…” Often it is possible to back off from one of the wild ideas just a little and turn it into a great idea.

Here is a powerful exercise to improve your happiness through the practice of gratitude:⁠
⁠
Close your eyes and remember someone who did something really important for you, something that changed your life in a good direction and who you never properly thanked.⁠
Write a 300-word testimonial to that person, call them and read them the letter. Or even better, ask them if you can visit without telling them why, show up at their door and read the testimonial.⁠
