Yin Yoga, unlike Yang styles where movement and strength are encouraged (Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Rocket, Power, etc.), is based on static stretching. The postures are mostly performed on the floor and are maintained for 3 to 5 minutes initially (and up to 20 minutes for more advanced practitioners).
This stillness and the relaxation of the muscles offer many benefits:
· Promotes mindfulness and letting go
· Mobilizes vital energy (prana) through the meridians
· It considerably increases flexibility by working on the structure of the connective tissue (fascia), tendons, ligaments and joints
As a complement to the Yin Yoga class, tennis balls can be used to perform a Self-Myofascial Release focusing even more on relaxing tensions and trigger points (muscle knots).
